The Measure of a Man: Character Part I

Character-Pt-1

“The Measure of a Man” series is going to explore the obvious and hidden qualities that actually make up a Man. Character is where we will begin.

Merriam Webster states that character is: “one of the attributes or features that make up and distinguish an individual” or “moral excellence and firmness.” If that is true, then it poses an interesting thought; character doesn’t arise solely from tough physical experiences, though these can result in character growth…it’s all about how we respond to the daily, real-life situations we are in. For example, do we daily sacrifice for our family and friends? Are generous to those in need? Do we use our strength as men to protect the weak?

If character was only built by intense physical experiences where you are pushed to the max and depraved from basic essentials, then where does that thinking end?

If we hold that as true then I suppose that the only real men out there are Navy Seals, Survivalists, and the SAS.

I’d like to propose the thought that character is much more about who you are than what you have done. I know many men who would climb a 10,000′ peak in a heartbeat, but asking them to share their fears, failures, and hopes with other men would require more courage than scaling the mountaintop. Yet it’s in sharing these deep parts of ourselves that we are sharpened and changed.

WC is about crafting experiences that provide a space for this type of vulnerability that grows character, all in the context of the stillness of the wild. We’re combining some of the best things in life (adventure, incredible food, camaraderie) with intentional, curated conversations that will lead to introspection and challenge men to come home changed for the better in every arena of their lives.
