Mt.-Baker-Header

[row] [col_7] [T]his 3 day alpine adventure will be a true physical challenge as we climb through old growth forests all the way to reaching the 10,781′ summit of Mt. Baker. During the climb, you will learn the basics of snow climbing, self-arrest and ice axe use, learn to use crampons and how to travel and camp on an active glacier. We’ll learn from a certified and mountain guide with over 75 Mt. Baker summits under his belt. We’re able to climb this challenging and beautiful route thanks to exclusive Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest permits. In traditional Wilderness Collective style, you will be eating the best possible food above 8,000′ and all climbing gear and equipment will be included. This trip will be a test of character and fitness.

Itinerary

Day 1: After a final gear check and briefing at Schrieber’s Meadow, we begin our ascent of Mt. Baker. Beginning at 3,400 feet, we travel through subalpine meadows and drainages. Hiking continues through old growth forest and we exit the forest at 4,800ft to our first full view of the mountain and our summit route. Our route continues along the ‘Railroad Grade’ as we ascend to our camp at 6,100 ft., perched high on the south side of Mt Baker. We’ll take in a spectacular view from camp of the Easton glacier.

Day 2: After sleeping in and recovering from the previous day’‘s work: breakfast and then training. Our guides cover all aspects of walking on snow, self-arrest, glissading, crampon and ice axe use as well as proper rope techniques for climbing the mountain. A lot of information and practice today: instruction continues with learning knots, harness use, anchors and running belays all around our high camp at the foot of the glacier. An early dinner and an early bedtime as we prep for our summit day.

Day 3: Summit day. We start our climb around midnight, depending on weather and route conditions. Following a hot breakfast, coffee, and tea, we top off all water bottles and begin our ascent. The route starts off by gaining the Easton Glacier. From there we ascend the gently angled glacier, following the path of least resistance around crevasses and ice falls, until we reach the crater rim at 9,800ft. We take a short break here before climbing the steepest section of the climb: the Roman Wall. The top of the wall, 10,500 ft., affords an amazing view of the interior of the summit crater, North Cascades National Park, and the Puget Sound. It is a short walk from here to the summit of Mount Baker at 10,781 ft.
